You would never jump into a huge project without immense preparation. That goes twice for kitchen remodeling, considering how much you have invested in it. If anything goes wrong, you could wind up without your essential kitchen. That’s why it’s important to follow these tips for remodeling a kitchen.
4 Kitchen Remodeling Tips
1. Plan ahead
The more prepared you are for the job, the less nervous you’ll be when the work is being done. In fact, the planning aspect of the project should take you a lot longer than the project itself. This is a good opportunity to:
- Figure out a budget
- Choose every material carefully
- Study the kitchen as is and picture how it will be
- Get a cost estimate
The National Kitchen and Bath Association states that you should be spending six months on this part of the project. There’s nothing wrong with taking your time.
2. Don’t move things around too much
Don’t get us wrong; you have complete freedom. But if you want to steer clear of unforeseen issues, keep much of the skeleton in tact. That is, unless you’re hiring the real pros to tackle the job, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
The walls, appliances, pipes, etc. should generally stay in the same place. Moving things around can get real difficult if you’re not experienced in kitchen renovation.
3. Consider lighting
Before you go knocking down a wall, think about what you could solve with lighting. Lights are a useful tool that can make things appear bigger or smaller. But if you do decide to completely renovate your kitchen, consider the appropriate lighting and where it should go. It really does make a huge difference.
4. Think storage
Many people think about expanding the room they have to hold more stuff. But sometimes the easier option is the better option. For example, have you considered adding more storage instead of more space?
If you’re sticking with the same footprint, consider installing bigger cabinets. Having tall cabinets not only looks great, but it’s very handy and cost-effective.
